Just when you think your contempt for Congress could not get any higher, our elected representatives manage to do something to ratchet it up another notch. After congressional shenanigans helped spark a major market sell-off and sparked fears of a double-dip recession, you'd think every single one of them would be heading back to their districts to figure out what their constituents wanted and to try to explain how they were going to help make things better. Or maybe a few of them would even spend the recess taking a crash course in macroeconomics and public finance, so that they could start exercising their public duties more responsibly.
But what did 81 of them decide to do instead? You guessed it: they are off on junkets to Israel, paid for by the American Israel Education Foundation, an AIPAC spinoff that has been funding such trips for years. That's right: during the August recess nearly a fifth of the U.S. Congress will visit a single country whose entire population is less than that of New York City.
Such behavior is especially disturbing in light of our current woes; even Greta Van Susteren of Fox News found it appalling (h/t Mondoweiss here and here). But it's not really a new pattern: in recent decades about 10 percent of all Congressional trips overseas have been to Israel, even though it is only one of the nearly 200 countries in the world.
Why do Congresspersons do this, especially at a moment when it is obvious that they ought to be worrying about conditions here at home? Mostly because such junkets burnish a legislator's ‘pro-Israel' credentials and facilitate campaign fundraising. Such trips also expose these visitors to the policy preferences and basic worldview of Israel's leaders, which is of course why AIEF pays for them.
I suppose I ought to be grateful that AIPAC and its sister organizations continue to work overtime to prove me and my co-author right. But there are bigger issues at stake here, which is why I hope that every one of those eighty-plus Congressmen faces a lot of nasty questions from their constituents upon their return.
And in a related story, the Israeli government has just announced a new round of settlement building in occupied East Jerusalem. (For apt commentary, see Matt Duss of the Center for American Progress here.) If you've been wondering why most people have lost faith in U.S. stewardship of the peace process and are turning to other strategies--such as the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement or the push for a Palestinian state at the UN --well, I think you have your answer. And if "two states for two peoples" is never achieved and Israel ceases to be either a Jewish majority state or a true democracy, you'll know exactly which misguided or feckless Americans helped bring that about.
UPDATE: American taxpayers will be pleased to know that Representative Steny Hoyer (D-Maryland) has reassured Israelis that financial challenges "will not have any adverse effect on America's determination to meet its promise to Israel." Translation: we may be cutting Medicare and Social Security for U.S. citizens, but Israelis--whose country has the 27th highest per capita income in the world--will continue to get generous subsidies from Uncle Sucker.

Time for a revolution agst pro-Israel lobby and other lobbyists
The country needs to get smart about how lobbyists are corrupting the system-- the problem is that as good as the internet has been on revealing such corrupt behavior on the part of our representatives, the MSM just has not covered this story enough. And the MSM still drives the news, unfortunately.
This story was picked up by a few Israeli newspapers and a few marginal American websites, CBS's webpage, and a few others, but so far, the big news outlets like the NYT's haven't touched it. Whereever it is picked up, it evokes the harshest condemnations universally in the comments section.
Now imagine another universe where Drudge or Huffington put this at the top of their page in bold lettering. These congressmen would be identified within a heartbeat and would be shamed to come back.
Whose money has "bought Congress"?
The Jews? The Jews and evangelical Christians? Others?
Just for the record:
...Gallup's estimates of the portion of the adult population that is evangelical have ranged from 35 percent in 1976 to a whopping 47 percent in 1998; last year's estimate was 41 percent...
http://www.usnews.com/news/campaign-2008/articles/2008/09/24/the-evangelical-vote-how-big-is-it-really
So is this about Jewish money, or votes from a plurality of all Americans?
It's clear the line Steve is taking. But this event, and in fact Steve's entire thesis, rests on shaky ground. He wants people to believe that a small group is manipulating public opinion and the political process to get their way despite the fact that most disagree with them. In fact, this group (the pro-Israel lobbying groups that obviously exist) is having an easy time of it because the majority of Amercans actually agree with them. (Occam's razor, anyone?)
Occam's Razor, Shmoccam's Razor
@David in DC
20% of congress is in Israel, aren't they? What the hell are they doing there after the disastrous mess of August 2, 2011?
You claim the majority of Americans back this. Based on what? Your great big clairvoyant DC eye? Your house-to-house?
The majority don't know. And my little peon survey here, amongst those I encounter is the area of the country you DCers like to mock, is: What The Hell Are They Doing There?
I'm sure these Congresspeople made these plans a long time ago. So they didn't change their plans because Wall St. is having a volatile week? And?
You claim the majority of Americans back this. Based on what? Your great big clairvoyant DC eye? Your house-to-house?
I don't know about this particular episode, but I was referring to Steve's "Lobby" hypothesis and the bigger picture. Israel consistently polls high (I know, I know, it's because "the Lobby" dominates the media and so people don't get the real story). Evangelical Christians are known to strongly support Israel, they make up a large chunk of teh population, and even Steve notes their leadership make up an important part of what he calls "the Lobby".
And these people are not living in DC for the most part. They are commonly referred to in the media and left wing blogs as "red-staters".
Steve tries to sway minds with his fiction that the so called "Lobby" doesn't reflect how the majority of Americans feel, but from what I can tell he is preaching to the choir. The Israel-haters all puff up their chests, talk to each other in their little echo-chambers, and meanwhile Israel goes on with consistent and strong support from the American people and therefore their leaders.
And my little peon survey here, amongst those I encounter is the area of the country you DCers like to mock, is: What The Hell Are They Doing There?
I have no doubt you and your little group of friends all think the same way.
... what overlap, if any, exists between the 81 emigrants in Israel this week and the remarkable number of gymnastic parliamentarians who leapt to their feet with applause as Mr Netanyahu insulted America before a joint meeting of Congress a few months back? These acrobatics occurred so often that it was clear that the people doing it were too busy calibrating their own amazing responses to the speech to pay all that much attention to what the Israeli prime minister was actually saying. Much to his delight, obviously.
Now why in the name of responsibility and common sense should Americans discard their life-support schemes like medicare and social security due to lack of enough funds, only to give away billions of dollars to Israel in order for them to expand their settlements and afford their citizens medicare?
You need to stop embarrassing yourself. We've already read "The Israel Lobby".
AIPAC channels millions of dollars in campaign contributions to candidates for federal office through a network of political action committees established throughout the United States by members of AIPAC's national board of directors. These directors boast that for every dollar that enters congressional campaigns through the PACs, they can steer at least one additional dollar to friendly congressional incumbents, or to opponents of unfriendly incumbents, through contributions by individual supporters which they collect and present as a "bundle" to candidates they favor.
In closed meetings for AIPAC members only, AIPAC directors have taken full or partial credit for the defeats of two former chairmen of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Republican Charles Percy of Illinois and Democrat J. William Fulbright of Arkansas....[The Lobby] is exactly how AIPAC is referred to by members of Congress, one of whom recently remarked to a foreign visitor that AIPAC visits to his office are "the most unpleasant moments" of his congressional schedule.

And here enters the helpless Obama. When Obama mentioned the Palestinian right in his Cairo speech, a coalition of pro Israel Democrats in Congress threatened to scuttle his Health Care Reform package, according to the Financial Times. Democratic leadership in Congress then, Reid and Pelosi, rushed to inform Obama to be nice to Netanyahu, or else. The mad dogs at AIPAC were all over Obama tearing his flesh to pieces; while Jewish leaders across the country threatened to switch their sizable campaign bribes to the GOP, unless the Democrats restrained Obama.
Israel will get away with whatever they can and have done for 60 years and with AIPAC controlling all the weak, sycophantic but disloyal (to the US) Congress members, the US will continue to lose respect and standing all over the world.
Peace in the Middle East will become reality when AIPAC and other Israeli sympathizers stop the deception campaign and begin to call the spade a spade. Unless we liberate our Congress from the Israeli Occupation, peace will remain a fairytale. Unless, America breaks the Israeli monopoly over our mainstream media, peace will remain an illusion, and AIPAC will continue to de-legitimize Israel and bring to full fruition the apartheid state called Israel.
You can twist and turn and performs all kinds of verbal and logical contortions in your attempt to muddy the waters and hide the truth about zionist control over US politics and foreign policy in general.
Your claim that 40 plus% of Americans are fundamentalist christians and therefore necessarily support israel is nonsense. Not all christians, fundamentalist or otherwise blindly support the zionist cause in palestine. Some do but certainly not all. As for control of the media, who do you think you are fooling? or you think we can't read?, the news outlets are controlled 95% by israel leaning jews period.
Jewish control of vital aspects of America's existence is real, true and ultimately destructive of America's future. People like you and your fellow sayanim and their useful idiots will call me "anti-semitic" for correctly recognizing what is right in front of my eyes....And if I had any power to influence ANYTHING in this country, I will be hunted down and destroyed. Fortunately I am a nobody
Betz says:
You need to stop embarrassing yourself. We've already read "The Israel Lobby".
Of course you have. But you don't appear to have read my post.
The fact that AIPAC devotes significant effort and funds to promoting their agenda is not in doubt. The fact that they are so successful, though, reflects the fact that they are fighting a downhill battle. Americans may not be aware of (or even care about) every little policy point that AIPAC is promoting, but they are broadly pro-Israel and it hurts a politicians chances with the American public to be painted as anti-Israel.
By now money is what controls the US government and politics and policies. This has been amply demonstrated by the fact that a large number of GOP Congresspeople votes as their money contributors want even though this is contrary to the opinion polls of their constituents. In short they obey money, not the voters.
RIP US democracy.
PS Lest one think this is the opinion of a crank, I would refer you to a recent piece by Jeffry Sachs of Columbia U. who says quite bluntly that the US is "owned" (I think that was his expression) by the millionaires and the billionaires.
Here is what Sachs said in the Huffington Post article:
The Republicans also misrepresent the costs and benefits of closing the deficit through higher taxes on the rich. Americans wants the rich to pay more, and for good reason. Super-rich Americans have walked away with the prize in America. Our country is run by millionaires and billionaires, and for millionaires and billionaires, the rest of the country be damned. Yet the Republicans and their propaganda mouthpieces like Rupert Murdoch's media empire, claim with sheer audacity that taxing the rich would kill economic growth. This trickle-down, voodoo, supply-side economics is the fig leaf of uncontrolled greed among the right-wing rich.
Not "owned" but "run by....and for" which I regard as the same thing.
Don't diminish the ability of marketers to get people to adamantly support policies that undermine their self interest. We are in a world of obsequious sycophants, where the truth is rarely heard and never identified. Where people are repeatedly told that up is down and black is white. I never cease to be amazed at the ignorance of people, the ability of people to cling to arguments that make no sense, to embrace ideology over facts and reality. This is ultimately a democracy, and we're too stupid to protect our own self interest.
give the link to articles you exclusively cite in a post. I like Mr Sachs quite a lot, HuffPo, not so much. The idiocy of the commentary there makes me despair for the liberal wisdom.
I will bring attention to this. Because I assure everyone that Hoyer's words aren't just words, congress wiil indeed keep giving Israel our hard earned money even as they are deciding how to make Americans pay for and sacrifice more for their wars of choice and spending sprees...and Israel.
They are traitors, there's no other way to put it.
American congressman: US economic woes won’t affect Israel
By HERB KEINON
08/11/2011 02:20
US Congressman Steny Hoyer says financial challenges "will not have any adverse effect on America’s determination to meet its promise to Israel."
The current economic crisis in the US will have no impact on US financial assistance to Israel, US Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-Maryland) said Wednesday.
Hoyer, the second-highest ranked Democrat in the House of Representatives, is leading a delegation of 26 US Democratic congressmen on a tour of Israel and the Palestinian Authority sponsored by the American Israel Education Foundation, a charitable organization affiliated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.
Hoyer said he wanted to “make it clear” that the financial challenges confronting the US will not “have any adverse effect on America’s determination to meet its promise to Israel in the form of aid for its qualitative [military] superiority, or for its economic security.”
Hoyer said he did not believe America’s financial challenges would have “any adverse effect on the economic relationship, or assistance, that we give to Israel.”
Hoyer said this assessment was bipartisan, and that a similar message will be brought to Israel next week when House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (RVirginia) will head up two Republican delegations, numbering 55 congressmen, to the country.
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, in a meeting he had with the delegation Wednesday, thanked Hoyer and the congressmen for US security assistance and for supporting earlier this year – in a tough economic climate in Washington – the allocation of $200 million for the Iron Dome anti missile system.
Netanyahu also said that if an agreement was reached with the Palestinians, it would entail a significant investment in Israel’s security infrastructure, something that will necessitate additional allocations from Congress.
Hoyer and the delegation are slated to meet PA President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad on Thursday in Ramallah.
At the press conference, Hoyer said he will urge Abbas “that consistent with the understandings between the parties historically, the only way to seek progress is through bilateral negotiations between the two sides.”
And I can think of a coupla other Yiddish words to describe this junket. But FP would probably rescind my comment privileges.
It is such an irony that a pipsqueak nation like Israel should be so central to the American decline. If you wrote a novel on this theme, critics would ban it for being too incredible.
a ring leader of not raising taxes on the super rich? It's clear whom he serves.
'Shonda' ist Yiddishe? (Stuffy Old Lingo Nazi Alert...)
Something of a cognitive dissonance "pinged" when the word emerged. So Yours Truly looked her up right quick. Here's what came out from a quick copy/paste to KDict (the free multi-source online open-code dictionary for Linux+desktop-of-choice):
Shonde \Shonde\, n. [AS. sceond. Cf. Shend.]
Harm; disgrace; shame. [Obs.] --Chaucer.
[1913 Webster]
Very easy to see how that bit of /le/ /Anglais/ /du/ /Chaucer/ found her way into Ashkenaz' Yiddishkeit, though. Emigrated with /so/ many people, is all. ;)
"...can think of a coupla other Yiddish words to describe this junket. But FP would probably rescind..."
Me too and quite a few. Fact is, /Rebbe/ Hoyer was a schoolteacher in Indiana before re-inventing himself to 'service' Maryland and indeed all of America with his remarkably classic Fascist ideology. BUT:
As the comic performer "Dirty Lenny" Bruce first pointed out to his NYCity Audience, there are quite a few different Words For Dirt in Yiddish ('schmutz' and 'schmeg' rise immediately to mind) - but is *no* such thing as a "Dirty Word" in Yiddish, unlike in the Anglo-Saxon heritage-laden audience he tended to address in his /schtick/. So to speak of "/fressing/ the maid" is a legit expression in Yiddish, although in the Anglo/Saxon context of the times (1950s more/less) it proved grounds for arrest on State Public Obscenity charges.
Sidebar: IIRC from history, that was when Mr. Bruce quite promptly and civilly *sued* the sitting judge, forcing their Lawful Recusal on grounds of self-interest in the upcoming Bruce Obscenity Case. That self-defense tactic worked beautifully, several times (and court dates with a number of different judges) in a row. Until, one day, the Sensible and Clever Bilingual Comic Man was found dead of a heroin overdose - locked in a dirty bathroom, with No Works To Be Found. An Obvious Suicide (FNORD).
And thus did end the life of the comic American /rebbe/, general heretick and Famous Social Messenger Leonard Bruce. Go figger while I regain the original thread... Ah yes. Yiddish is inherently CLEAN; Anglo/Saxon maybe a little /schmutzie/... And your usage is spot-on.
Item: To love Yiddish is to love life. Same as to love English, Portugese, upcountry Swahili, you name it. So here's /lechaim/!
Enjoy the day! Thanks for the workout. And that is all. 0{:-)o<
What is the divine importance of Israel? And why all nations are pipsqueak in front of it?
RE: "they are off on junkets to Israel" ~ Walt
MY COMMENT: Money might not buy you happiness, but it can certainly buy you a Congressman!
“You can’t use tact with a Congressman! A Congressman is a hog! You must take a stick and hit him on the snout!” ~ From 'The Education of Henry Adams', By Henry Adams (American journalist, historian, academic and novelist, 1838-1918)
RE: "Why do Congresspersons do this...?" ~ Walt
FROM ALISON WEIR, 08/11/11:
(excerpts)...81 Congressional representatives from all over the country, led by Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, are traveling to Israel this month...
...No other lobby on behalf of a foreign country comes anywhere near to controlling such wealth or taking so many of America’s elected representatives on a propaganda trip to their favorite country.
Not all those going on these trips are enthusiastic. The wife of one Congressman who made a similar trip some years ago said that she and her husband had never been exposed to such pressure in all their lives. She said that at one point on their trip, her husband – a normally extremely tough man – was curled up in a fetal position.
A staff member of one representative participating in this month’s junkets said the representative had no choice. If the Congressional rep didn’t go on the trip, the rep would be targeted by AIPAC, large quantities of money, including massive out-of-state money, would be raised for the opponent in the next election, and quite likely the representative would be defeated. The staffer said that the Israel Lobby is far too powerful to ignore and that American voters have no knowledge of what’s going on....

And the US merely, at most, will wag a little finger and say "bad boy."
To revisit the piece on when did America's decline begin, I would be tempted to say, "when it glued itself to Israel". That was the fatal attraction that contained the seeds of America's decline including above all setting the US eventually on a course of endless budget busting wars vs Islam.
And here I thought it was caused by the Sodomites. Actually, such a vengeful God is not the True God, is not a deity sufficient unto itself. I know your Bible isn't so good on philosophy, what with the ex-nihlo and teleological problems and what not. And, the n there's the ten commandments, the Golden rule and the making a golden calf of Israel which are all abominations. Your Bible comprehension isn't so good. Then again, your Bible isn't what you think it is. You do know the Catholic Church edited and selected the works and dogmas that are therein? Of course you don't, or you ignore it. Help me, are you one of those who sees the Catholic Church as the whore of Babylon? Tell me this too, are you a pre-trib, mid-trib, or post-trip rapturist?

..seeing as Clinton not only backed a Palestinian state, but came closer to achieving it than any Prwsident.
So Jgarbuz, would you care to explain why there were no natural sisters till 2005?
God is NOT a real estate agent. Do you believe fairy tales too?
What Happened to Original Commentary?
This is barely a repetition of the popular critical blogosphere.
If they are meeting Palestinians, Abbas who is pushing the UN declaration, in opposition to US requests, then they will get a diversity of opinion.
It is NOT a propaganda tack, but an information gathering tack.
Do you regard the issue of Israel/Palestine as unimportant, that representatives should not find out about first hand?
Do you think they will be led on a guided tour only, sadly as many on the left have, rather than inquiring independently from those with differing opinions?
If your conclusions are founded (I think the declaration of the danger that Israel would not survive as a Jewish majority state is sound, instead evolving/devolving to a single state), then an intelligent observer would conclude similarly.
Give people room to learn. Don't indulge in the chastising at every breath that suppresses learning, please.
Have you been paying attention?
"If they are meeting Palestinians, Abbas who is pushing the UN declaration, in opposition to US requests, then they will get a diversity of opinion."
Actually they are not meeting Palestinians. The whole point of this junket is for them to be indoctrinated into Zionist thinking.
"Do you think they will be led on a guided tour only, sadly as many on the left have, rather than inquiring independently from those with differing opinions"
That is absolutely the case. There will be a brief meeting with Abbas. Remember the craven failure of Abbas to jealously represent his people that was exposed in the "Palestine Papers?" I know you don't, cause you, like this trip are exposed only to very limited viewpoints.
Um, they met Abbas and Fayyad yesterday
At least get your facts right.
ou needY a Civic Lesson Richard WittyQ
It is not Steny Hoyer's job to set Foreign Policy. It is the President's.
And don't give us the 'find out what is going on' argument.
Unless you've been living under a rock for the past 20 years, or you're too old to know about modern media, 20%of our Congress does not need to go to Israel to find out what's going on.
Their generals and presidents and public officials are over here all the time with their Holocaust hands out whining for money.
Their American-based organizations can provide Congressmen with what's going on.
But more to the point, these Congressmen do not represent Israelis. They represent Americans, and they should be paying attention to them after destroying this economy once again through their own stupidity and lack of knowledge of basic economics.
I have a list of 23 congressmen and women on this junket, but I need a list of everyone. If anyone has this information, please post it. Here's what I have to-date:

Yes, these congressmen and women should be ashamed. Not because they go to Israel, but because they do not go and visit the Palestinians. They don’t see the checkpoints, they don’t see that people and goods cannot move freely and they cannot see that a people that these representatives of the American congress support is suppressing another people simply with the reference to security and many other halftruths or misconceptions. Why is the congress silent about the continued settlements building on Palestinian land? How can the US congress accept the fencing in of a population for decades and without any sign of willingness to accept that people who have been living and are living in the region cannot just be moved to another place. How come, that Gaza is an enclave behind fences? How come, the wall built around the West Bank is only met by silence? Where is the search for what is wrong and what is right? Has there recently been any serious and honest attempt by Israel to find ways to progress with the peace process? Hardly!. And now also the threat by the Senate, if the P.A. will request the UN for recognition of their statehood, they would withhold all aid paid to the Palestinians. What a cynical world! The money paid is only as a token of atonement anyway. People want to be free. And with the wise support from integer politicians Israelis and Palestinians could easily live together in peace. Where are these wise leaders to show the way?
Iran names street after Rachel Corrie
Tehran city council has named a street after an American activist who was crushed to death by an Israeli military bulldozer in the Gaza Strip in 2003, a local newspaper has reported.
The report in the Hamshahri, a daily affiliated with Tehran's authorities, said the council has named the street Rachel Aliene Corrie. It said the sign would be placed in the city centre, but did not say when it would be displayed.
Corrie, a pro-Palestinian activist from Washington, was trying to prevent what she and other campaigners believed was a push by the Israeli military to demolish nearby Palestinian homes. She was 23 at the time of her death.
Iran does not recognise Israel and supports the Palestinians.
The decision marked the first time an Iranian street has been named after a US national since the 1979 Islamic revolution that ousted the pro-west shah Muhammad Reza Pahlavi.
Before the revolution, at least three high streets in the Iranian capital were named after former US presidents: Dwight Eisenhower, John F Kennedy and Franklin Roosevelt.
Iran and the US have not had diplomatic ties since militant students occupied the US embassy in Tehran, holding American diplomats hostage for 444 days from 1979 to 1981.
There are a few streets in the city named after western nationals, including Bobby Sands, a member of the IRA who died on hunger strike in a British prison in 1981, and Edward Brown, a British Orientalist known for his work on Iranian history.
Washington and its allies say Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons, and have imposed sanctions on the country. Tehran maintains its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes.
Congratulations, America!
After this, and after Israeli PM Netanyahu's very popular appearance in the U.S. Congress, Joint Session, in May of this year, it is certainly time for the U.S.A. to officially adopt Israel as the nation's 51st state. Sure, it will be a little late; in effect Israel has been the 51st state for many years already.
Also, this will make it more easy to keep the flow of U.S. dollars going, overseas, to the not quite newborn baby.
One frequent feature of the hasbara trips that many Christians take to the (not much is) "Holy Land" is that, gee, sorry, can't make it to Bethlehem--too dangerous, don't cha know. God forbid they meet Christian Palestinians, god forbid they meet anyone with the Sabeel Center.
I don't know how many have been to the US/Mexico border. Many look over the river and see the corrugated tin shanties and feel proud of the USA. They look down on those poor, worthless souls. Clearly, we Americans work harder, care more about our children... Those barbarians.
Ignore the fact that those Mexicans will come here and work harder in one day for $100 than most Americans will their entire lives. I know, I've worked with them. Few ask or wonder how we have so much wealth and they have so little. Even fewer wonder if they, or their gov't has had a hand in that.
The same bigotry is reinforced on these trips. Look at how dirty and depraved those dirty Palestinians are. Forget that their water, their rights and freedom of movement are seriously impaired. They aren't allowed to trade with other nations, even to travel from one side of their towns to another.
None of those on the hasbara trips will see that. The germ of question will not be brooked. Those who orchestrate these trips do everything to guard against one asking the quesitons/lesson Jesus taught and challenged us with; namely, to love our neighbors as ourselves, regardless of faith, tribe or nationality. And, that we should walk a mile in another's shoes before judging them. There is little more perverse, more unholy than the smug and complacent who look down their nose at the poor and beleaguered.
I don't know if there is a God, or if that be so, if there is an ultimate judgment that we all face. But, I sure hope so.
If your god is a bigoted, racist ass, it is not worthy or worship. Your comprehension of the Bible is very poor. See my comments to you above. Your ignorance is nothing to base policy on. The first commandment says not to worship anything of this Earth. The "good Samaritan" teaches us to love our neighbor as ourselves regardless of faith, tribe or nationality. Neither God, nor Jesus will recognize you and your utter lack of concern for the oppressed among you. Thousands of IDF soldiers have declared that Israel is "starving, humiliating, dominating and oppressing an entire people." While the Bible has some whole books that celebrate genocide, in other places, and in later texts it utterly condemns this. How you can pick and choose from such an equivocal work, to take the narrowest and most bigoted reading shows you don't understand the message of Jesus, nor the understanding of his contemporary, Rabbi Hillel.
As to Christians in Palestine, they are definitely Anti-Israel. Go check out the Sabeel Center, read what you can of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher--they are not pro-Israel. They say they don't know, and can't recognize the Christians of America. Or, check with the Episcopal, and many other missionaries who go every year to protect the Palestinian farmers on the 3 days they are allowed to harvest their fields they've owned and tended for centuries. These ministers are regularly beaten by Jewish settlers, in their Jew only enclaves. I don't know if you remember Jim Crow, but there is nothing Christian about that.
False JGARBUZ: According to a poll
When Palestinian Christians from Bethlehem were asked about the primary cause for Christian immigration out of the area, 78 percent cited Israeli restrictions as their reason for leaving.

AIPAC's control of the MSM is more important than it's money when it comes to forming public opinion. That controls includes preventing Al Jaseera from publishing in the USA. The morality of the "4th power", this is USA's MSM journalism, is worse than the other 3 powers.

Some few just *do* enjoy the smell of mammon in the morning. Which is maybe why they hate our Internet so.... The way we use it - actually communicating, comparing, contrasting and even doing Critical Thinking right out loud in pixels with each other (horrors!) - apparently threatens them bullys' McFreedom® Consensus Agenda all the world around.
Nothing more than that; nothing to worry about... Just go back to sleep now...

GOP:s search for a candidate will soon be over
As I predicted above, Israel will soon become the 51st state of the U.S.A. (Never mind that it isn't situated in the Western hemisphere, it is such a formidable asset for America so Congress won't make that an obstacle.)
And then: The obvious choice for Presidential Candidate (R) in 2012 will of course be Bibi Netanyahu. Also on the ticket, for Vice President: Mr Lieberman.
But so far, I cannot tell whether it will be Joe, or Avigdor.
...one Freshly Reconditioned Keyboard in the Next Lifetime. Perfect timing; ditto the punchline.
Right fine Crystal Ball y'got there too. (Still roflmao).
And that is all! 0{;-)o<

More weapons for Israel now for free
Israeli defense ministry is reported to be in talks with the Pentagon to buy the American military equipment that will be retired following US withdrawal from Iraq.
Israel says it wants to equip its military with the used American equipment, including Humvee combat vehicles, which is a highly profitable business due to its low price compared to new equipment.
Israel is also willing to acquire surplus weapons and ammunition the US will no longer need following the withdrawal at bargain prices.
"It seems that in some cases it is cheaper to sell to other countries than to transport back to the US or bases in Europe," JPost quoted an Israeli defense official as saying.
Saudi Arabia and Egypt, both longtime customers of US weaponry are also reported to be eyeing the used American military equipment.
While Washington has removed thousands of tons of equipment from Iraq but there is still plenty more left in the country.
What will happen if any US politician says no to giving the $3 billion per year to Israel? He will be destroyed.
What happens when you do not pay "protection money" to the mafia? They make an example of you.
"The cutoff will harm the US more than it harms Israel."
Then someone in our government has a lot to answer for, in addition to harming national security. This should count as treason.
"they will have explain to the 30,000 laid off workers in Boeing and other US defense constituents why they did it."
Did what? Take $3billion in aid money from Israel and give it to the US Secretary of Defense instead? Why would that make the slightest bit of difference to anyone at Boeing *except* the dude with the spray gun who will be told to paint Stars and Stripes inside of a Star of David on the side of the plane?
You assume that the $3billion will simply disappear. It won't i.e. every dollar *not* gifted to Israel is a dollar that *can* then be spent by the US Department of Defense on..... the defense of the United States of America.
Net effect on Boeing = zero.
"Israeli defense companies can't wait for the US to cut off the aid, so that they can sell their own domestic weapons systems to the MoD in Israel instead."
Ahem. The key word is "sell" i.e. the MoD in Israel will have to *buy* those weapons to make up the shortfull in US equipment that had previously been *gifted* to the MoD.
Q: Does the Israeli govt have an extra $3billion in discretionary spending?
A: Nope.
You don't get it, do you?
Israel is getting $3billion in weapons FOR FREE from the Americans, and if that is removed then the only other source is it's own industries, but *they* don't make stuff FOR FREE.
Ehud Barak will have to pay for weapons built by Israeli industry, and he doesn't have any money.
"if the US stops selling Saudi Arabia"
The Saudis buy their weapons. You know, with cash. So why on Earth would the USA stop selling them weapons?
And, even if the USA had a brain-freeze and did refuse to sell F-15s to the Saudi's then why, exactly, would the Saudi's do without?
After all, the Saudis have **MONEY**, and so they would simply buy Eurofighters and Leopard 2 tanks instead of the F-15 and M1A1 Abrams tanks.
They certainly wouldn't go without because (have I mentioned this before? I think I did...) they have **MONEY**, and so they are perfectly willing to pay for their weapons.
Compare and contrast:
If the USA decided to stop giving weapons to Israel for free then...... Israel has to do without.
Because (and did I mention this before? I think I did...) every else except Uncle Sugar will want to be paid for their weapons, and.... Israel doesn't have the money to pay for those goodies.
As in: it either gets those goodies for free or it has to do without.
"They get their cash even easier than Israel gets it!"
OK, now you are simply being ludicrous.
Saudi Arabia has oil.
Lot's of oil.
That oil is worth a vast amount of money, which is why the Saudi government has a vast amount of money to spend buying weapons.
To complain that it is unfair that Saudi Arabia has oil and Israel doesn't is about as sensible as arguing that India and China aren't playing fair because they have a manpower advantage that Israel lacks.
Deal with it, sunshine.
The Saudi's have oil, and therefore they have MONEY.
They can buy their weapons, and there is no shortage of countries who would be eager to take Uncle Sam's place as the Weapons Manufacturer Of Choice.
By countrast, Israel has.... nothing.
They are therefore reliant upon Uncle Sugar to give them their weapons for free, and if Uncle Sugar ever grew weary of doing so then the number of other countries willing to step in and play Sugar Daddy to Israel is..... zero.
Learn some logic, it helps.
