I'm pleased (and a mite chagrined) to announce that my article "The End of the American Era" won the readers' poll over at The Browser. My thanks to any of you who went online and voted for it.

Needless to say, winning an online poll like this doesn't tell you much (anything?) about the relative merits of the different nominated articles. For all I know, I was the only person to mention it on a blog, which might well explain the outcome. I've spent some time reading the other articles in the contest and I commend them to you: there are some pretty interesting and wide-ranging pieces in the group.

Again, my thanks to any of you who voted, and I promise I won't let it go to my head. And I'm even more grateful for the responses to my earlier request for help on things to read on the general topic of policy analysis.

Congratulatations, Prof.

Congratulatations, Prof. Walt. I have a request if you are reading these comments. I just read a piece by your FP-mate David Rothkopf cheering on our 'invisible' heroes who are apparently setting off explosions near Iranian nuclear sites, which just happen to be by the way near civilian population centers. I like a lot of what Rothkopf has to say, but this piece made me ill. I mean, these are acts of terrorism, even if the 'good guys' are doing them. (If Iran were to explode one of our nuke sites that would be terrorism, but when we do it, it's just good ol' strategery). What are we becoming to act this way? I was hoping you coulld post a response to his piece, as I often find your contrary opinions refreshing, even when I disagree with them.

You hit the spot

I totally agree with you. Your conclusions are far fetching and absolutely correct. It is now essential for the US to develop on the economic lines so that the burden of war doesn't cripple us more than it has already done to us. Getting out of Asia and Middle East is what is immediately required and following the footsteps of China on the path to progress is what is needed if we don't want a USSR style disintegration. We have to keep build links
so that we come up as economic giants once again.
